Kate walked up to the door and was about to open it when Owen grabbed her arm.
"We don't know what we're up against here." He said, "What if it is a bigger animal than we can handle?"
"Then we call the cops, or Animal Control."
"Agreed." Owen said, "But let's find out what we're dealing with before you go skipping out the front door."
"I don't skip." Kate said. She brushed her hair away from her face and put her ear up against the door. "I can't hear a thing. Come here. Listen."
"So now I'm the one hearing things?" He said.
Kate grabbed his arm and pulled him closer to the door.
The floorboards creaked. Owen balanced himself and it was quiet. The only sound that came from beyond the door was a squeak from the hanging lantern that doubled as their security light.
He stepped back and was about to open the door when the scratching noise started up. This time it came from behind them.
